This girl has been the laughing stock of Srilanka for the past couple of days, thanks to the YouTube video that's being circulated on Facebook and what not. So here's what I think but this is just my opinion so just read it and toss it over yr shoulder :)

The video is hilarious! Me and my colleagues laughed till we cried. But hers wasn't the only funny video. Miss USA thought 'oh wim oh weh - oh wim oh weh' was the sound of a lion.. What? oh yeah lol. Then Miss China thought 'Pong! Tush!' was the sound of a rocket. And mind you, many of those rockets literary blew up as they went up haha! Oh and Miss France thought that rockets do a "count up" and she goes "un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq..." - that's like 1,2,3,4,5; instead of a count down haha how funny is that? :D

But then again, they must be nervous right? And the differences in the answers give us a nice little cross section of the world communities and how they comprehend certain ideas is pretty interesting. I actually thought the sound effects were a brilliant idea later on, after watching about 10 or 15 contestants. Just randomly watch a few of those videos and you'll think so too.

Finally, this girl has all the right to contest and you can't blame people for passing this video around and laughing at her expense because it's actually very funny! So whose fault is it?? The judges! And not only the ones in Srilanka, but going by these videos, in many other countries too. Hopefully the so called organizers of this event and other events like this should learn a darn good lesson. THEY are the laughing stock of the country.. no worse.. Universe. People must be saying.. what the heck were they thinking???? Yeah, what the heck were you thinking 'judges'? 

Alright then, what if she WAS the best out of the whole lot? Then let me ask you this. How come girls with better looks or personality or both don't contest? Take a wild guess.. That surely must say something about the standard of these contests, at least in local level and also about the way our society look at girls who go for these. In general, there are people who either are not qualified enough (in this case, the beauty and brains department) to contest OR will not, because they don't have the guts to.. But are waiting to see who does, and slander them. And in a country where. when a pretty girl who is highlighted in media gets married, people are gathering to ask who's the idiot who married her and she's a like this and that.. do you think an unassuming girl who contest for Miss Srilanka stands a chance?

Corrupt elements of Sri Lanka’s cricket circles and those who think that the game is their family property have already held a lavish party to celebrate the impending exit on August 31 of Duleep Mendis, perhaps the most knowledgeable cricket brain of the country’s cricket administration.Media reports claimed how elated the infamous family members were that they have finally managed to plot the ouster in such sinister fashion and coat it with icing to present it to the public.Once the watchman is out, the looters will have a field day in plundering the coffers of the game at their will, and after waiting for a while, and perhaps by the next year, the biggest thief of them all is tipped to take over the seat vacated by Mendis.To his credit, Mendis attempted to do his best to stop the rot that is setting rapidly in the game, utilizing the wealth of his experience and knowledge in a near four-decade association with the sport, managing to swim against the undercurrents and dealing with characters of all sorts.But every good thing has to end. So, Sri Lanka will bid adieu to one of the most internationally recognized names of the game in typically ungrateful Sri Lankan style by showing the door unceremoniously, with no regard to the legend’s reputation, dedication and service to the game.The official reason to kick Mendis out could not be more hilarious. It is because he is past the official government retirement age of 55. This is a country which elected someone to the post of Executive President, obviously the most important office of the country, at the age of 72.But everyone in cricket circles know the real reason. Mendis has been the bane of corrupt elements who found it difficult to circumvent the wily man on their shady deals.That Mendis was sidelined and elbowed out for sometime has been no secret.While he was in office SLC went and appointed another Additional CEO. Someone else flew out and represented Sri Lanka at the ICC’s Chief Executives’ meetings while the most knowledgeable man was kept in limbo in his office. The man who has been involved in all previous cricket World Cups and even prepared Sri Lanka’s bid document to host the 2011 World Cup, was removed from the World Cup organizing.Mendis is a remarkable personality with an illustrious history in the game and there is no one to rival him in Sri Lanka or for that matter in the world.His uniqueness is that he has served in every imaginable capacity as a player and also as an administrator.He has captained teams at all levels and has played at all positions and even did duty as wicket keeper.After retirement as a player, Mendis served Sri Lanka in various capacities including team coach, manager, advisor, chief national selector and even as chairman of SLC for a brief period.Known as “Dulla” in cricket circles, he joined SLC in 2001 as Director-National Development and was promoted as Chief Executive in 2004 replacing Anura Tennekoon. He has survived the murky political waters of the SLC for five years, merely due to his status as a master of the game and his skill to manoeuvre under all circumstances.Mendis has been involved with all World Cups since the inaugural edition in 1975 in some capacity either as a player, captain, coach, manager or an official.When Sri Lanka joined India and Pakistan to bid the hosting of 2011 World Cup, Mendis was an automatic choice for the committee and was even given the task of preparing Sri Lanka’s bid document. But later, he was sidelined cruelly from the committee by Sri Lankan officials.As the CEO of SLC, Mendis was instrumental in arranging the supply of free meals to all staffers which proves his maturity in man management. A tense situation developed in Chilaw as a group of protesting monks were blocked by the police from reaching the Munneswaram Kali Amman Hindu Temple where the animal slaughter ritual was expected to take place yesterday (25).
The riot police was deployed in the area and the police have prevented the group of monks from reaching the Temple. The monks, angered over the police blockade are currently seated on the road, refusing to move from the area till the ritual is stopped. 
Jathika Sangha Sammelanaya Puttalam Coordinator the Ven. Bandirippuwe Vineetha Thera earlier had said numerous appeals to have the sacrifice banned was disregarded by the authorities, and as such the Buddhist monks and the lay people were to meet at the Devagiri Temple on the Chilaw-Kurunegala Road and go on a peaceful procession to the Kali Amman Kovil where a sathyagraha was to be held.
A Chilaw police spokesman had earlier said arrangements have been made to prevent any illegal activities.
It is also learnt that the protest was on hold by the police following a court order.

On August 5th 2010 we, the volunteers at the Horizon Lanka Foundation, in conjunction with the English teachers of the Thakshila school, Mahavilachchiya hosted an English camp for the students of the school. At 9.00am, a delegation of 46 students from grades seven and eight eagerly entered the gates of Horizon Lanka in anticipation of the day ahead.

The theme that selected for the day was World Culture. A topic that is interesting, educational and relevant to all ages. The students were welcomed with a song and dance, thereby lightening the atmosphere. We then conducted two sessions focusing on the seven continents and the culture specific to each area. This was primarily visual presentations using images and Basic English words to paint a picture of world culture. In order to maintain the ‘English’ element of the teachings, an interactive grammatical session on tenses was done. Here the student were invited to construct sentences using the present, simple past, present progressive and future tense.

The afternoon session comprised four challenges. These challenges were based on what was previously taught and were designed to test the students’ ability to speak, listen, read and write the English language. Points were allocated for each task. All teams performed well in this area with the lowest score being 76/120. This is clear evidence of their level of understanding. At the end of the day, a winning team was selected and a prize given to reward their efforts.

Based on the feedback received from both staff and students, it can be concluded that the day was a success. With regards to our objects of the days as measured delivery of the sessions, student interaction and performance during the challenges, these were all accomplished. It must be noted however, had there not been time constraints, the results could have been even better.
